RWTH Aachen University (RWTH)
Germany
RWTH is the largest technical university in Germany with approx. 45,000 students enrolled in 157 degree programs. More than 7,000 students and 900 doctoral students graduate annually from RWTH. The number of foreign students, i.e., 10,455 students from 125 countries, and RWTH ́s great international network with over 100 universities worldwide highlight the university’s strong international reputation. The university’s annual budget amounts to approx. 950M€, with about 360M€ covered by external funding. RWTH is composed of 260 institutes in 9 faculties. It offers 36 graduate programs nine of which are so-called Research Training Groups funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
RWTH is one of 11 German Universities of Excellence and receives additional funding for one joint and two own clusters of excellence from the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the DFG. The Chair of Fluid Mechanics and the Institute of Aerodynamics (AIA) belong to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University. AIA has more than 30 years of experience in computational fluid dynamics in general and in simulating turbulent flows in particular. Moreover, the development of highly accurate and highly efficient numerical methods for high-performance computers is one of its major research fields.
As a central institution, the RWTH Aachen University's IT Center (ITC) operates HPC equipment and performs research and methodical support with a focus on Virtual Reality and High-Performance Computing to support the computational sciences. The research work is committed to the enhancement of the user productivity and the efficiency of simulations targeted for supercomputers. ITC participates in the OpenMP language committee, the OpenMP architecture review board and the SPEC benchmark group. It is also engaged in collaborations and research projects within the performance tools community through the VI-HPS (Virtual Institute - High Productivity Supercomputing).
