Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (FZJ)
Germany
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (FZJ) – a member of the Helmholtz Association – is one of the largest research centers in Europe. It pursues cutting-edge interdisciplinary research addressing the challenges facing society in the fields of health, energy and the environment, and information technologies.

Within FZJ, the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) is one of the three national supercomputing centers in Germany as part of the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS). JSC operates supercomputers, which are among the largest in Europe and has more than 30 years of expertise in providing supercomputer services to national and international user communities. It undertakes research and development in HPC architectures, performance analysis, HPC applications, Grid computing and networking. JSC successfully managed numerous national and European projects including the PRACE Preparatory Phase project and multiple implementation phases.

The success of the computers QPACE, JURECA, one of the first Modular Supercomputing Architectures (MSA) in Europe, and JUWELS demonstrates the competence of JSC in the field of system architecture technologies. This work has been extended towards architectures suitable for data-intensive applications in the Blue Gene Active Storage (BGAS) and DEEP-ER and DEEP-EST projects. JSC has built-up a number of Simulation and Data Laboratories (SDLs) to further enhance its competence in key Computational Science areas including Computational Biology, Molecular Systems, Plasma Physics, Climate Modelling, Engineering, and Neuroscience. With Scalasca, JSC is the world leader in scalable portable parallel performance analysis tools.

JSC has started long-term co-operations with several companies for research and development of Exascale technologies. Together with IBM and NVIDIA the POWER Acceleration and Design Center has been established. JSC founded together with Intel and ParTec the ExaCluster Laboratory and is together with ATOS and ParTec in the Musketeer consortium.

FZJ is the coordinator of RAISE and is together with its third party ParTec responsible for the project management and administration in the Management work package (WP1). It contributes to the development of AI- and HPC-Cross Methods (WP2) of RAISE to support the Compute- (WP3) and Data-Driven Use-Cases towards Exascale (WP4). It provides access to novel prototype architectures including Quantum Computing technologies, and supports guiding the software developments in RAISE towards a generalized framework. It collaborates with RWTH Aachen University in the use-cases AI for turbulent boundary layers flows (WP3). Furthermore, FZJ will work on the use-cases Seismic imaging with remote sensing (WP4) and Sound engineering (WP4) together with the Cypress Insitute and University of Iceland. FZJ contributes to the Establishment of legal grounds for the RAISE business (WP5). It hosts software and Open Access repositories, the public website of the CoE, contributes to social media activities etc., and together with other partners develops tailored courses and creates a European network in the Outreach and Services (WP6) work package.
